2. Genre / Atmosphere

The tone of the opening scene of Exit Through The Gift Shop is very rushed, you get the sense that everything they are doing must be done quickly which is achieved through montage. The mood is very light which is created by the song "Tonight the Streets Are Ours" by Richard Hawley. The title and chorus of the song could be the theme song for street artists and the street art movement, which challenges that only paying advertisers should be allowed to display their messages in public spaces, artists should be able to use the spaces too, not to sell anything but to make the world a better, more beautiful place. Although the song is up lifting you also get the sense of fear the artists feel as they realize what they're doing is illegal through clips of the artists preparing paints and stencils running and climbing through city streets clandestinely putting their artwork where ever possible all while evading the police.

I feel there are a lot of mixed tones and moods as you go from a close up shot of paint being prepared to a shot of an artist putting up a stencil to a artist climbing up onto a roof of a building to get away from the police.

  1. Good job explaining how the mood is set in this opening through the use of some film techniques. Also good that you have chosen which four techniques to focus on in more detail. BUT YOU HAVE A LOT MORE WORK TO DO. Check your handouts and my blog for ideas on what you need to include in your posts for C-- describe, explain, analyse for each one. Make sure to get "describe" done for each one first so you achieve this assessment.
